‘Mr’ Whicket: Since the snow earlier this year, our pub cat Whicket has decided to move in with us on a semi-permanent basis. We now keep finding him on our bed, our sofa, and pretty much anywhere else he feels like. This has stopped him limping (surprise!) but may be worrying those of you who are not seeing him as often as usual. Don’t worry, he’s fine – he just now seems to prefer our sofa to a chair in the bar.

Cellar upgrade: We finally decided that our good old traditional cellar was in need of a complete makeover. This was partly to reduce the amount of wastage we were experiencing, both when serving beer and when cleaning the beer lines, but more importantly, it has improved the quality of the beer in your glass, and means that we can serve both cask ale and keg products at exactly the right temperature.

In total we replaced all the old ‘big bore’ beer lines with modern small bore lines; installed a second chilled python for our cask ale lines; added an air compressor and gas pumps for all the lines and replaced our three cask ale pumps with new items. At the same time we replaced Carling with Carlsberg lager, and added Kronenbourg 1664 extra cold, which also required a new flash cooler under the bar. The good news is that the beer now tastes even better!
